Enjoy this month's Ultimate Story...
Begin the Journey and Live the Adventure with Prairie Sands
Prairie Sands is tucked away in the Sandhills and Platte River Valley of Nebraska. It is rolling prairie, wide-open spaces and yucca &a gorgeous setting for a unique hunting experience. We are located in the town of Sutherland which is in the south west part of Nebraska, in what is known as the Sandhills area. Our location is about 20 miles west of North Platte off of Interstate 80 and is approximately 246 miles NE of Denver, Colorado via Interstate 76 to Interstate 80. Omaha is located 300 miles to the east via Interstate 80. North Platte is home to the regional airport for ease of traveling.
There is nothing in the world better than walking the open fields with shotgun in hand and a dog working in front of you for upland game. Prairie Sands Hunting, located in the heart of Nebraska's pheasant hunting mecca invites you to come walk these open fields and experience the upland hunt of a lifetime. Our hunters have a great experience each time out, as our fast flying birds and spectacular terrain make for a great combination. We are host to some of the finest pheasant hunting in Nebraska, and also offer chukar, quail, sharptail grouse and prairie chicken.
We offer several different hunting venues. Whether you are looking to hunt Sandhills ranchlands, fertile farm ground or the Platte River Valley, we have got the terrain for you. Our dogs work and train together every day to become fine tuned upland bird dogs that grace the hunting fields. These dogs have trained on all species of upland birds found in Nebraska, and are sure to provide some memorable points, flushes and retrieves. Hunting with a well trained group of dogs is an experience that no hunter shall soon forget.
There is a 5-Stand Sporting Clays course set up next to the lodge. If you want to warm up before the hunt you can shoot a round or two, or if you didn't get enough shooting in the field, take some additional practice at the end of the day. A great way to also settle the "top-gun" issue and prove who has the sharper eye!
Your typical hunting journey begins the night before the hunt when you arrive at our luxurious lodge. Completed in 2003, our new hunting lodge features deluxe accommodations for up to 10 people, complete with five bedrooms, a beautiful kitchen, dining room and a hottub area. You will find all the modern amenities you will need here, and the comfort and charm of the decor will ensure a very pleasurable stay. The evening meal will give us all a chance to get to know one another and plan the next days hunting adventure. You will feel as if you are at a fine dining establishment, yet no tie is needed here and you will be encouraged to take your shoes off and enjoy your favorite beverages.
The next day will start bright and early with a breakfast fit for a king. Your guides will join you for the short drive to the hunting fields. This is a grand environment in which to hunt. Gently rolling Sandhills, as far as the eye can see, stretching out before you. You get a sense of wonder, maybe like the pioneers who trekked through or homesteaded this country. It is one of the last places in the United States that can literally be called wide-open country. Hunting here is an experience you will not soon forget.
Shortly after the dogs are released the hunt begins. As birds are located the pointers will point and the labs will flush. The dogs tag-team the birds at each point. Your group will be enjoying the hunt of a life time. It is truly a treat to watch these dogs work together. This scenario will be repeated again and again through out the day.
After a field lunch the remainder of the afternoon will be spent walking over the gently rolling prairie, watching the dogs work the terrain and periodically getting a shot at a passing bird. Sometimes the hunter will score, other times we will watch the bird fly away across the open countryside.
Area attractions include Cabela's renowned showroom in Sidney. Ole's Big Game Lounge Nebraska s most Famous Watering Hole with hundreds of game mounts bagged by Ole Herstedt on display in Paxton. And North Platte is home to the famous Buffalo Bill's Scout Rest Ranch.
Things are bigger in the Sandhills-the sprawling ranches, the endless sky, the miles upon of rolling grass dunes. It s a place where you can lose yourself and forget that anything else exists. A place where the wind is your only company. A place where cows, fence posts and windmills are the skyline. A place where the setting sun puts on such a colorful show, you'll be telling your grandchildren about it for years to come.
The Sandhills Journey is just that-a journey! It is a journey into one of the most unspoiled and beautiful landscapes found anywhere in America. The rugged beauty of God's land and the hospitality of the local residents are common threads no matter where you are. Begin the Journey.
Regardless of the number in your group, our goal is to customize a hunt to meet your needs and schedule. Please call when setting up your trip, as available hunting dates may change. We will provide you with a complete list of items required for your hunt. At this time you can give us a list of what you would like for in field refreshments, just another way of being an extension of your company.
Our goal here at Prairie Sands Hunting is to make you a part of the family. You will arrive as a client and leave as a friend. We are looking forward to working with you to ensure a very memorable trip and meeting you in the near future.
